Merisi in Vienna

That looks so good, I'm getting hungry! :-)

My mother would send me out into the snow-covered vegetable garden on Christmas morning, to pick those little cabbages for Christmas dinner.

I make Brussel sprouts with chestnuts for Thanksgiving, following a Julia Child recipe that I found in a Parade Magazine from the early 80s.

Heather @girlichef

How cool that you and your husband met in Amsterdam...I've always wanted to visit there! And what a perfectly seasonal dish. My neighbors grow brussels sprouts, so every time I walk out my side door, I see them!

Frank @Memorie di Angelina

I made this dish (or rather, something very similar, with braised in butter rather than roasted in olive oil) at Christmas, and it was a big hit with the family, even those who aren't partial to Brussels sprouts. The chestnuts lend a nutty sweetness that balances and complements the sprouts perfectly.

Paz

Oh I love the idea of this food combination!

Duespaghetti

We love the idea of dressing up Brussels sprouts with chestnuts and raisins! I suspect that our plates would be clean at the end of the meal, as well.

Gata da Plar Mony

Grazie tantissime!

Ah! Adesso capisco perchè è così speciale per te l'appuntamento con la prima lettera dell'Abbecedario Culinario della Comunità Europea! :*)
E altra cosa: adoro i Cavolini di Bruxelles, lo sapevi?! ^^

Ottimo contorno e altrettanto Ottimo contributo alla raccolta!
Grazie tantissime, un bacione :)

My Italian Smörgåsbord

absolutely delicious!
you already know of my love for chestnuts and the ideaof having them in a savory dish totally intrigues me. Reminds me of North Italian cuisine that I always wanted to try. I am sure your recipe makes this dish even better. Will save it for next year, hoping chestnuts will be abundant.
buona settimana!

Thank you, Merisi, for sharing your memories. And I'll take a look at Julia Child's recipe.

Hi Heather, I hope you get some Brussels sprouts from your neighbor ;) I recommend a visit to Amsterdam. It's really an interesting city. Taking a boat tour along the canals at night is one of my best memories of it.

I agree, Frank: the combination works perfectly.

Ciao Paz. I hope you get to try it. I know you are partial to roasted Brussels sprouts ;)

Cara and Stefano, I hope you get to try this dish.

Prego, Mony. Mi fa piacere aver scelto un ingrediente che ti piace. Spero che riuscirai a provare questo contorno. E naturalmente mi fa piacere aver contribuito qualcosa di tuo gradimento alla tua festa virtuale.

Ciao Barbara. Both this side dish and the soup I made with chestnuts are winners and I will remind readers again of them next chestnut season. I am almost done with my little stash, so next I will work on some recipes using chestnut flour.

Ana

What a perfect combination for this time of year. I got some Brussels sprouts the other day, planning to make something really similar. Looks delicious, loving all your posts!

Simona Carini

Thank you so much, Ana, for your kind words. Seeing as Brussels sprouts are in season and popular, I am preparing another recipe with them to be published shortly. Stay tuned!
